They Said It Couldn't Be Done

Well, maybe it's possible but Corelle has built it's brand on producing decent looking "unbreakable" dishes and I'm here to say that after many years, I have actually done "it".  Sadly, it wasn't on purpose because I really love my dishes. They are simple but attractive and usually, they bounce.  Oh, but not this time and it didn't just crack or chip. It shattered so completely that at first I wasn't really sure what it was.  As I swept up the carnage I was amazed at how far the pieces flew and how that modest little bowl had become a sizable pile of nasty shards.

It took an unusual set of circumstances to produce that pile of rubble. You see, I pushed my limits by stacking the dishes in the drainer as high as possible (yes, sadly I don't have a dishwasher in this picturesque cabin we call home).  Then, even though I knew I shouldn't, I topped it all off with a 2 quart pan. But I was tired and just wanted to be done and it worked...initially.  However, when the weight of the pan became a little too much, it fell to the floor, taking my little bowl with it.  The pan must have hit it at just the right angle because it absolutely exploded. Poor judgement resulting in consequence.

A similar thing happened to me eleven years ago and you would think I'd learned about pushing past what is reasonable.  The consequence then however, was much more serious than a broken bowl.  It was about 11 o'clock on a week night and I had spent most of the evening designing a very impressive and attractive (if I do say so myself) wall display in my kitchen. It was full of texture and contrast with perfect balance. I loved it. I was particularly happy that it was designed around a favorite clock that had a perfect spot near top center where a halogen spotlight would highlight the face.  But I had a long day at work and I was more than tired. The only thing left to do was hang the clock but it needed to go much higher than I could reach and my hubby and my (athletic, basketball/football playing) sons were already in bed.  So instead of going to bed as well, I grabbed a kitchen bar stool on which to climb to hang the clock. You can see where I'm going with this, can't you?  I not only fell, but when I did, the stool tipped, hitting the inside of my knee, forcing in outward.  Fortunately, unlike the bowl, my leg didn't break but I blew out my knee causing a surgery and five months on crutches. If only I had stopped just short of catastrophe.

My point to this rambling is that maybe you will think twice before pushing yourself, past what is reasonable. Moms in particular are famous for that, aren't we? You may have service for eight and two strong knees now, but we are all one lapse in judgement away from shards and crutches. I'm just saying.....

Blessings,

Sam
